Many annual events are held in Burke and surrounding areas. Here is a brief description of some more famous ones:
Burke Centre Festival
Held in September, Burke Centre Festival is all about the community. This two-day festival is filled with activities for kids as well as adults. There’s no admission fee and all are invited. You can also bring your pets. Pet care stations are scattered throughout the ground where water and plenty of animal treats are available. Visitors with pets are recommended to keep their pets leashed all the time.
The park gates are open on these two days from morning (10am or 11am) till evening (5pm). With that said, the wine area is open till 10pm.
Thousands of people attend the festival. Major attractions include amusement park rides, many different kinds of children’s activities, food vendors, a beautiful wine garden featuring live music, and, of course, live entertainment.
Majority of park rides are geared toward young kids, including moon bounces and pony rides. You will have to pay for the rides but the cost is minimal. Kids can also enjoy police displays, face painting, and balloon animals.
For adults, there are dance groups, live music, karate demonstration, and arts and crafts show, where several vendors will display their wares.
There are also many food vendors offering all kinds of foods. You can bring your own food if you are in mood of picnicking in the wine area.
USA & Alexandria Birthday Celebrations
Every year the city of Alexandria celebrates USA’s and its own birthday on the Saturday preceding 4th July. Fireworks extravaganza is the highlight of the celebrations, which also include many activities for children, live music, patriotic birthday cake, and a wide array of food vendors selling all kinds of foods.
Visitors are recommended to bring their lawn chairs as well as blankets. Admission is free and the timings are from 5pm to 10pm.
George Washington’s Birthday Celebrations at Mount Vernon
Come and enjoy the favorite breakfast of George Washington, comprising of hoecakes, swimming in honey and butter. The breakfast timings are 9:00-12:00pm, but beware the breakfast is so popular that it might finish early. Don’t miss the 18th Century characters who pleasantly surprise the first president with arousing birthday cheers.
Black History Month Observed at Mount Vernon
Black History activities are organized every year in February, where interpreters show visitors a glimpse of the lives as well as contributions of slaves who helped built the plantation home of George Washington. These activities are held daily in February, the only exception being the President Day.
Come and spend a day outside in the company of McLean Community. Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, carnival rides, and, of course, variety of great food.
Mount Vernon Spring Wine Festival and Sunset Tour
If you are a wine connoisseur, you can’t afford to miss this event, which celebrates the rich wine history in Virginia. Enjoy the candlelight tours of this Mansion. The tour includes the basement where George Washington used to store his wine.
