Giving Back to the Community

It is a privilege to call Northern Virginia our home, and we want to do all we can for our neighbors and friends.  Here are just some of the ways that Burke Dental takes part in the life of our community.

Of course teeth are important, but at Burke Dental, we are concerned with your enjoyment of life!  Enjoying life starts with good overall health.  Many reports have shown how a plant-based diet can play an important role in decreasing cholesterol, controlling diabetes, managing blood pressure, reducing obesity, and a long list of other health-related factors.  Most people recognize the benefits of a plant-based diet but they get intimidated by the presumed challenge of creating well-balanced plant-based meals.  We have a solution for you!  We want to invite you to participate in a natural lifestyle cooking class.  The class includes informative discussions, demonstrations, and best of all, samples!  The seminar itself is FREE, with the only fee being for books.  The class is a 6-part series beginning at 7:00pm on Tuesday October 18 & 25; November 1, 22, & 29; December 6. The classes will be held at Living Hope Center located at 5235 Merchants View Square, Haymarket, VA 20169.  For details and to register, call Living Hope at (800) 260-7171 or visit NaturalLifestyleCooking.com

What a blessing it is to help others.  Showing love to our fellow man is one of the most rewarding experiences we can have.  Dr. Willis spent the second week of August in La Ceja, Colombia volunteering with a group of medical and dental professionals.  We had a wonderful group of volunteers from Virginia, Washington, Oregon, California, and Haiti.  Together, we were able to provide medical and dental care to some 1,800 patients!

We must admit that the medical team was responsible for the vast majority of those patients; we dentists tend to be a bit slower;)

It’s truly not about the numbers.  It’s about allowing ourselves to be used to affect positive change in the lives and families of others.  And about seeing a beautiful country, of course!

Burke Dental is proud that Dr. Willis was invited to meet with the youngsters of Adat Reyim Preschool to talk to them about the importance of dentistry.

We were able to give a demonstration of what it’s like to go to the dentist to have our teeth checked and cleaned. We talked about how to brush our teeth.  The children helped decide which foods promote good oral health and we also talked about the (disappointing) importance of limiting sugary snacks.

Thank you so much to the congregation and staff at Adat Reyim.  If you’d like to learn more about their program, you can visit their website at http://www.arpreschool.com/

Dr. Willis Elected Vice President of the Northern Virginia Dental Society

Posted by Dr. Willis (Vice President, Northern Virginia Dental Society)

We are excited to announce that Dr. Willis has been elected Vice President of the Northern Virginia Dental Society!

The current Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS) membership totals over 1,300 dentists in Northern Virginia. The Society’s membership includes dentists who are general practitioners as well as those who are specialists such as oral surgeons and orthodontists. NVDS represents and serves the members of our society and the public by fostering quality oral health care through continuing education, open communication, and legislation.

Dr. Willis is humbled by the honor and is happy to accept this opportunity to further serve the dental community. Dr. Willis will also continue in his role as co-director of the NVDS Virginia High School Science Fair committee and as chair of the community outreach committee which organizes the annual Mission of Mercy (MOM), a program designed to provide oral health care to those members of our community who would otherwise not have proper care.

Dr. Willis was lucky enough to be invited to a local Brownie Troop meeting.

Here is a photo of Dr. Willis demonstrating a typical dental visit—Thanks for being a great volunteer, Kayla!

Burke Dental Participates in Mission of Mercy (MOM) Project

Posted by Dr. Willis (Chairman, Northern Virginia Community Outreach & Mission of Mercy)

Mission of MercyDr. Willis has been a leader in planning and implementing the Mission of Mercy (MOM) project since 2010.  In 2015, the event took place on March 13 & 14 at the Medical Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College, and Burke Dental was thrilled to take part.

MOM is an annual project dedicated to providing dental care to our neighbors and community members who would otherwise have little or no way of obtaining proper care. As we all know, Northern Virginia is an expensive place to live and there are many within our community who cannot afford regular visits to a dentist. That’s why Mission of Mercy exists–to provide a venue for those in need to receive dental treatment free of charge.

This year 877 patients received treatment, with an estimated total value of care of $546,368. We had 238 community volunteers, 97 general dentists, 29 specialists, 59 hygienists, and 99 dental assistants.

As Chairman of the Community Outreach Committee and of this MOM event, I can tell you firsthand that every single one of the people who contributed to the success of this project worked very hard and deserve more thanks than can be expressed in a posting like this.

We also want to thank NBC, FOX, and the community leaders and public officials—including Senators and Delegates—who were kind enough to come to the event to show their support.

We are especially indebted to the Northern Virginia Community College Medical Education Campus for allowing us to host the event at their facility.  Burke Dental is proud to be involved with this event each year and we look forward to another successful MOM project in 2016!  Let us know if you’d like to be part of this very rewarding activity!

Ice Bucket ChallengeYes, I Took the Ice Bucket Challenge!

Posted by Dr. Willis

One of my favorite patients was all-too happy to participate with me in the Ice Bucket Challenge to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. She could only dump about half of the ice water at a time, so about halfway through she kept coming after me saying, “Wait a minute, I’m not done! I’ve got more ice!”  She eventually got it all dumped on me.

Judge Not—Except at the Virginia High School Science Fair

Posted by Dr. Willis

I am lucky enough to be a Co-Director of the Virginia Dental Association (VDA) committee for the Science Fair competition between high school students throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.  I have also served as a judge at the Science Fair for the high schools of Fairfax County, VA.  It is clear to me that the students invest a lot of time and effort into the research, planning, development, and execution of their projects. All of the students display an impressive amount of poise and professionalism during the event. Congratulations to all participants!
