What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

A popular cosmetic orthodontic procedure to restore the structure of the jaw and replace missing teeth for partially or fully edentulous patients is the installation of implant-supported dentures. An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants in the jaw. This type of overdenture is used when a patient does not have teeth in the jaw, but the patient must also have enough bone in the jaw in order to support the implants.

An implant-supported denture is installed with special attachments that will snap onto the attachments on the implants. These dentures are made for the lower jaw, simply because a traditional set of dentures are the least stable on the lower jaw while it is most stable on the upper jaw and does not require the use of dental implants. They are sometimes fixed in place and can only be removed by a dentist, and can at other times be removed by the patient in order to clean them and the gum area. When you discuss your interest in implant-supported dentures with your dentist, they can help you understand whether you should have them fixed or removable.

There are two types of implant-supported dentures, bar-retained and ball-retained. Bar-retained dentures consists of a thin metal bar that is designed for the curve of your jaw, and this is attached to two or more implants that are installed in your jawbone. The clips are fitted to the bar or the denture (in some cases, both), and the denture fits over the bar and it is then securely set in place. Ball-retained dentures, also known as stud-attachment dentures, mean that each implant in the jawbone has a single metal attachment that fits onto another attachment on the denture. Implants are ball-shaped and fit into the denture.

The Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures

Whether you choose individual dental implants or implant-supported dentures, you will find that implants have a major leg up on tooth replacement alternatives. Implants are a longer lasting, more permanent solution. While bridgework needs to be replaced within 10 years, dental implants last much longer and only require the occasional adjustment by your dentist. On average, the procedure to install implant-supported dentures has a very high success rate, and Dr. Ghanavati is absolutely dedicated to making the process as smooth and painless as possible.

Implant-supported dentures are easier to maintain over the alternatives. Unlike dentures, there is no special care involved. Even with removable implant-supported dentures, it is easy to take them out to wash and rinse them as you would your natural teeth. When the implant-supported dentures are fixed, you are able to brush and floss as normal. In turn, they look as natural as your other teeth, and this is one of the most important benefits. Implant-supported dentures are the most natural and least intrusive option for replacing missing teeth.

Missing Teeth? You Have Options!

If you have one or more missing teeth, you know the discomfort and embarrassment that comes with it. For some, it isn’t so obvious; for other patients, it becomes too much and can even affect your ability to speak or eat. There are various reasons why you may be missing one or more teeth:

  • Sports Injury
  • Advanced Gum Disease or Tooth Decay
  • Genetics
  • Physical Injury or Trauma

At Burke Dental, we aren’t here to judge. We don’t care why you are missing teeth – we simply want to find the best tooth replacement for you. You deserve a complete and bright smile, and we want to help. You have options!

Solutions Available for Replacing Your Missing Teeth

Implant-supported dentures are best for those with enough bone in their jaw to support them that are also looking for a long-term solution to tooth replacement. Most adult patients in good health that have lost one or more teeth are likely good candidates for implant-supported dentures, and any health issues you have will be discussed during your initial consultation. If they are not right for you, however, there are other options.

There are alternatives to implant-supported dentures, whether you choose other options for budgetary or health reasons. Traditional dentures are designed to conform to the shape of your mouth. They are supported by the underlying bone structure. At times, traditional dentures simply rest on the gums, not supported by secured dental implants. However, they too often rub against your gums and create sore spots if they aren’t cared for correctly. They are removable, though, and can be cleaned easily for long-term use.

Bridgework is another solution for those patients with missing teeth, sometimes including natural looking teeth and sometimes not looking natural at all. There are patients that aren’t concerned with aesthetics and simply want to make sure that the supporting teeth do not shift because a tooth is missing. Bridgework can last between 5 to 10 years before they need to be replaced. All these options will be discussed before you and Dr. Ghanavati decide on implant-supported dentures.
